Another split stem question

Ok, I just removed the split stem in a quartz watch to replace the battery. I successfully put the stem back on, but now the date wont change when you pull the stem out to the first position. Did I do something wrong when putting the stem back on? is there a special kind of process when putting the stem on that prevents the date from acting like this? Thanks
