91 percent Isopropyl Alcohol question

Postby JohnClu » Mon Oct 01, 2018 4:48 pm

Good evening, I am new to the forum and have an Isopropyl alcohol question. Can I use 91 percent Isopropyl Alcohol to remove any remaining water from my cleaned and rinsed movement parts instead of 99 percent without the risk of rust? Thanks for any help! John

John,
I am new to the forum too but have been into horology for many years so maybe I can help here.
Yes you can use 91% but I would recommend running the parts through some type of dryer box or at least use a hair dryer on them after the rinse. 91% is far far better than using only water. Of course the higher the alcohol content the better but if you do a decent job drying the parts you should be fine.

Thanks for the help James, 91% is readily available and not too expensive. John
